I ask myself that question almost everyday. What was the thing that made me realize that I loved music? What are the elements in a song that moves me? For me it all began when I was a young chap. We had a Chickering baby grand piano in our living room and I would lay underneath the piano case while my sister Karen would play music by the great composers. I remember hearing Rachmaninoff's “Prelude in C# minor” as I lay in wonder at what my ears we're experiencing. I realized that what I loved was the power of the left hand octaves and the story that was behind every note and chordal movement in the right. You see, the great composers would write music to tell a story about what was occurring in their lives. Without lyrics they could express emotion that words could not. I realized that this piece was the gateway to rock music for me. I loved the intricacies of classical/symphonic music with the power of rock.
